Most RV owners take a few months off from camping during the year. Often, RVs are put in storage for the winter. Although many are aware that it is important to protect the water system from freezing temperatures by adding antifreeze, they often overlook other important aspects of preparing for storage. Remember the following tips for properly getting your RV ready for storage.
Pick a Storage Location
Ideally you will be able to store your RV in a covered area. If this is not possible, verify that your RV will not be located under a tree. Branches falling on the RV may cause damage. In addition, avoid parking it where grass and weeds grow to help prevent infestation by bugs and pests.
Tires
Chock the front and rear wheels and verify the tires are inflated to the level recommended by the manufacturer for cold weather. Consider covering the tires to protect them from UV rays. Also consider periodically moving the vehicle throughout the storage period to prevent flat spots developing on the tires.
Interior
Thoroughly clean the interior of the unit. Check for any fabric issues and repair them as needed. Visually inspect all seams, including roof seams and window sealant. To prevent water from getting into openings, reseal any cracks. Remove anything perishable from the RV. Also remove anything that can freeze. Clean the refrigerator and leave the door slightly open. Consider leaving cupboards, drawers and compartments open. Close blinds to prevent UV rays from fading the carpet and upholstery if the RV is stored outside.
Prevent Infestations
In addition to removing food items that may attract rodents and insects, it is necessary to look for places they might seek to make a home. Cover all vents and seal any other locations a rodent might get into. Also consider places where wasps might build a hive.
Prepare Electrical System
Turn off the main breaker, unplug appliances and remove batteries from flashlights and other items. Consider removing the engine battery as well and store it in a dry place where it can't freeze. Check the battery throughout the storage period and charge if needed.
Properly preparing your RV for storage prevents the likelihood of you finding issues when you are ready to go camping again. In addition it can help increase the lifetime of your RV. The above tips are relatively simple, but effective to achieve these goals.
