An accident is a stressful ordeal — and after the initial shock, you have to get down to dealing with the aftermath. That means finding a body shop to fix the damage to your vehicle. There are many choices, so how do you make sure you find the right business for the job?
- Talk with your independent insurance agent. Hopefully you have already called the agency to file a claim and review your coverage, but they may also have recommendations of high quality shops in your area.
- Ask around. Inquire whether friends and family have had any experience with local businesses and look online for ratings and reviews.
- Get several estimates from local shops. Notice their labor charges. Some businesses raise their hourly labor cost to cover more overhead.
- Ask questions to make sure you're not comparing apples and oranges on the estimates. Does the shop intend to use new, used or aftermarket parts? How many coats of paint and clear coat do they apply? Does the business carry insurance in case of damage or theft while your vehicle is in their shop?
- Inquire about a warranty on the work. A reputable collision repair company should offer at least a one year guarantee on parts and labor.
- Listen to your gut. The lowest estimate isn't necessarily the best choice if it seems like a shady operation. If an estimate is a lot lower than other businesses, it could be a red flag that they cut corners.
After an accident, you want to get your vehicle fixed as quickly as possible, but it's important to take your time and make sure you're handing your keys over to a business that does quality work at an affordable price. Luckily, your auto insurance policy is there to help pay the bills and get you back on the road as soon as possible.
